The HOKA Mach X 3 running shoe represents an evolution, a shoe that bridges the gap between everyday training comfort and race-day responsiveness. In its third iteration, HOKA has struck the right balance with this plated trainer that delivers on its promise of versatility without compromise.
I have experience running in a variety of carbon-plated shoes. In my testing of the Mach X 3s, I found they are the first to challenge super shoes by delivering the high level of comfort found in traditional daily trainers with the responsive nature of super shoes. In fact, I had to double check the HOKA website. Can this be true? Can these shoes really offer comfort and top-level responsiveness.
Yes and yes.
The HOKA Mach X 3 features a Pebax plate for added propulsion, which makes it a fast and bouncy trainer for speedwork and tempo runs. It is more of a "super trainer," as it is not designed to be as aggressive or perform in the same way as a carbon-plated super shoe.
For the past several years, I had generally turned to the HOKA Clifton for my daily trainer on roads. But now I have an alternative for days when I need a little pep in my step, or even doing a speed workout or a long run. The options for the HOKA Mach X 3 may certainly land it on my best running shoes of 2025 list.
Over the past decade, I’ve tested and reviewed dozens of road and trail running shoes. In addition to this HOKA Mach X 3 review, you may also be interested in: A recent review of the HOKA Challenger 8, a terrific daily trainer for trail runners; and others including the HOKA Mafate X and the HOKA Mafate 5, both from earlier this year.

HOKA Mach X 3 delivers sweet spot between plush and performance
At first glance, the Mach X 3 might seem like just another chunky HOKA. But as I stepped into them for the first time, I immediately noticed something different. While maintaining HOKA's signature high stack height (44mm heel, 39mm forefoot with a 5mm drop), this shoe trades the brand's typical cloud-like softness for a firmer, more responsive ride that rewards faster paces.
The magic lies in HOKA's thoughtful midsole construction.
The shoe features a dual-layer design with PEBA foam on top for energy return and EVA foam below for stability, all supported by a winged Pebax plate. This isn't the aggressive carbon fiber found in super shoes, but rather a more forgiving alternative that provides propulsion without the harsh, unnatural feel that some runners experience with full carbon plates.
What types of runs is the HOKA Mach X 3 good for?
The Mach X 3 excels in that crucial training zone where most runners spend their quality workout time. Whether you're grinding out tempo runs, tackling interval sessions, or pushing the pace during long runs, this shoe adapts seamlessly. The rocker geometry facilitates smooth transitions, while the generous cushioning protects your legs during those higher-mileage training blocks.
At 9.5 ounces, it is heavier than other road shoes, but this shoe doesn't feel clunky underfoot.
The weight distribution and responsive midsole create an surprisingly nimble feel that encourages turnover rather than hindering it. This makes it an ideal choice for runners who want one shoe that can handle both their midweek tempo run and a long run like a marathon simulation effort on the weekends.
How is the comfort in the HOKA Mach X 3?

HOKA has addressed many of the comfort issues that plagued earlier versions.
The Hoka Mach X 3 features a more traditional and secure heel counter compared to the Mach X 2, which had a less secure, potentially problematic heel design. The Mach X 3's updated heel counter aims to provide a better lock-down and overall comfort, addressing issues that runners experienced with the previous model's upper.
The refined collar design and softer tongue reduce hot spots, while the breathable woven upper keeps feet cool during intense efforts. The J-Frame technology provides subtle guidance without feeling restrictive, making this suitable for runners with mild to moderate overpronation.
The outsider rubber compound offers solid durability, and the high-abrasion areas show thoughtful reinforcement. Runners logging 40 to 60 miles per week, can expect 400 to 500 miles from a pair, which is respectable for a shoe in this category. Most of my super shoes start to show their wear around 200 miles and are headed for a donation at 300.
What runners should consider the Mach X 3?
This shoe is perfect for intermediate to advanced runners who want a single shoe that can handle multiple types of workouts. I would heartily recommend the HOKA Mach X 3 to my runners who are training for a marathon. I have used the Mach X3 for recovery runs, midweek tempo runs and a longer weekend run with speedwork.
The Mach X 3 is likely a good option for runners who find full carbon-plated shoes too aggressive or uncomfortable for daily training but still want that responsive feel for quality workouts. The firm yet cushioned ride makes it an excellent choice for those transitioning from traditional trainers toward more performance-oriented footwear.
However, if you prefer HOKA's traditional pillowy-soft ride or need maximum cushioning for recovery runs, you might find the Mach X 3 too firm. Similarly, runners who exclusively run at very easy paces may not fully appreciate the shoe's performance-oriented design.
How does the Mach X 3 compare to super shoes?

Previously, it would have been unfair to compare responsive running shoes without carbon plate to super shoes.
The Mach X 3 helps level the playing field.
In the increasingly competitive “super trainer” category, the Mach X 3 distinguishes itself through its versatility and accessibility. While shoes like the Nike Vaporfly series demand perfect form and fast paces to shine, the Mach X 3 rewards effort across a broader range of speeds and gaits.
Compared to other plated trainers like the Saucony Endorphin Speed series, the Mach X 3 offers more cushioning and a less aggressive plate feel, making it more forgiving for longer training runs.
Against traditional daily training shoes, it provides significantly more energy return and responsiveness without sacrificing durability.
HOKA Mach X 3: The Verdict
The HOKA Mach X 3 succeeds where many modern running shoes fail: it doesn't force you to choose between comfort and performance. While it may not have the outright speed of a carbon super shoe or the plush comfort of a max-cushioned trainer, it offers something perhaps more valuable — the versatility to handle whatever your training plan throws at you.
For runners seeking a single shoe that can elevate their training without breaking their stride budget, the Mach X 3 represents excellent value. It's proof that sometimes the best tool isn't the most specialized one, but rather the one that adapts to your needs day after day, mile after mile.
