The HOKA Mafate 5 represents a significant evolution in trail running footwear, building upon the beloved Mafate legacy while introducing modern innovations that make it a standout choice for serious trail runners.
After putting dozens of miles on these shoes across diverse terrain, I can confidently say they deliver on HOKA's promise of maximum cushioning without sacrificing trail-specific performance.
The HOKA Mafate 5 (11.1 ounces for men's size 10 and 8.1 ounces for women's size 8) is a maximum-cushioned, neutral trail running shoe featuring an 8mm drop, 5mm Vibram Megagrip lugs for aggressive traction, and a dual-density midsole with a supercritical foam top layer. Its warp knit upper with a TPU cage provides a secure fit, while the rocker geometry aids in smooth transitions, and the heel-focused Active Foot Frame offers support to the trail runner.
While we are only about two-thirds of the way through 2025, I can easily say that the HOKA Mafate 5’s performace make it a leading candidate to be among the best trail running shoes of 2025. Read on for more about the HOKA Mafate 5 in this trail running shoe review.
What makes the Mafate 5 special

The Mafate 5 excels where many maximum cushion trail shoes fall short: providing bomber protection and comfort without feeling sluggish or disconnected from the trail.
The shoe's most impressive feature is its ability to absorb punishment from rocky, technical terrain while maintaining enough ground feel to inspire confidence on technical descents and tight turns.
While most of my trail running is on light to moderate terrain, I would not hesitate to take the Mafate 5s on a technical trail.
HOKA has engineered a shoe that doesn't force you to choose between comfort and performance. Whether you're grinding out long miles on moderate terrain or tackling technical single track, the Mafate 5 adapts to the demands of the trail while keeping your feet happy mile after mile.
Key improvements of Mafate 5 vs. Mafate 4
The Mafate 5 addresses several pain points from earlier iterations. The upper construction is notably more durable, featuring reinforced toe protection that can withstand repeated rock strikes without showing wear. The heel counter provides better lockdown than the Mafate 4, eliminating the slight heel slip that some runners experienced in previous versions.
Perhaps most importantly, HOKA has refined the outsole compound and lug pattern. The new Vibram Megagrip outsole offers superior traction on wet rocks and loose dirt compared to the Mafate 4, while the revised lug spacing prevents mud from building up as readily. The midsole geometry has also been tweaked to provide a more natural heel-to-toe transition without losing the signature HOKA cushioning.
Ideal runner profile and terrain
The Mafate 5 is purpose-built for runners who prioritize comfort and protection on long trail adventures. Ultra runners and high-mileage trail enthusiasts will appreciate the shoe's ability to maintain cushioning even after hours on technical terrain. The generous stack height makes it particularly appealing to runners transitioning from road running or those seeking maximum impact protection.
These shoes shine brightest on moderate single track, rocky terrain and long training runs where comfort becomes paramount. They're less suited for racing applications where minimal weight and maximum ground feel take precedence, though the Mafate 5 is surprisingly nimble for its substantial construction.

Real-world performance testing
Over six runs totaling more than 50 miles, I subjected the Mafate 5 to a comprehensive range of trail conditions. On single track trails, the shoes provided excellent stability and confidence-inspiring traction, even when navigating root-strewn sections at a decent speed. The wide platform and low center of gravity make it nearly impossible to roll an ankle, even when fatigued.
Through moderate terrain featuring loose rock and embedded stones, the substantial midsole cushioning proved its worth, absorbing impacts that would typically leave feet sore in less protective shoes. The reinforced upper construction showed no signs of wear despite repeated contact with rocks and branches.
The grassy sections revealed one of the shoe's strengths: versatility. Unlike many technical trail shoes that feel clunky on smoother surfaces, the Mafate 5 transitioned seamlessly from moderate terrain to flowing grass trails. The outsole provided reliable traction without the aggressive lugs catching or creating instability.
Mud and water crossings highlighted the improved outsole design. The Vibram Megagrip compound maintained grip on wet rocks where previous Mafate versions might have struggled, while the refined lug pattern shed mud effectively, preventing the buildup that can compromise traction.
Technology and design integration

HOKA's signature Meta-Rocker technology creates a smooth heel-to-toe transition despite the substantial stack height, preventing the clunky feeling often associated with maximally cushioned shoes.
The compression-molded EVA midsole provides consistent cushioning that doesn't break down over time like some softer foam compounds.
The engineered mesh upper balances breathability with protection, while strategic overlays provide structure without adding unnecessary weight. The gusseted tongue prevents debris infiltration, a crucial feature for long trail runs.
Performance expectations
Responsiveness and speed: While not designed for racing, the Mafate 5 is surprisingly responsive for a maximum cushioning shoe. The Meta-Rocker geometry promotes efficient turnover, though runners seeking lightning-fast ground feel should look elsewhere.
Durability: Early indicators suggest excellent longevity. The robust construction and high-quality materials point to a shoe that will maintain performance well beyond 300 miles of trail running on moderate to even technical terrain.
Comfort: This is where the Mafate 5 truly excels. The generous cushioning and comfortable fit make it ideal for runs where comfort trumps speed, particularly during long training sessions or ultra-distance events.
The bottom line: HOKA Mafate 5 review
I have tested, worn and put thousands of miles in HOKA trail running shoes. The HOKA Mafate 5 represents the pinnacle of comfort-focused trail running footwear. While it may not be the fastest shoe on the trail, it's arguably the most comfortable for long-distance adventures.
Runners prioritizing protection, comfort, and versatility over minimal weight and racing performance will find the Mafate 5 an outstanding training partner that encourages longer, more adventurous trail explorations.
