A common refrain for runners is to be sure to get enough protein.

After all, running creates small tears in muscle fibers. Our bodies repair those tears and recover when we are at rest. And we can boost our recovery with healthy doses of protein. By getting in protein throughout the day, our bodies use it to repair muscle damage and strengthen the tissue, especially after long or intense runs.

Protein also provides muscle maintenance. During endurance running, some muscle protein breaks down for energy. Consuming adequate protein helps prevent excessive muscle loss and maintains lean muscle mass.

We’ve also heard that carbohydrates are the primary fuel source for running, which is true. However, protein helps maintain stable blood sugar levels during longer runs and helps store glycogen (energy) in muscles.

What is the best protein powder for runners?

Previnex Nourify PLUS contains all branch chain amino acids, which can help stimulate protein synthesis, reduce muscle breakdown, and aid in recovery.

There are many protein options for runners and other endurance athletes. I’ve estimated that I’ve tried at least 10 different varieties in order to hit 100g of protein daily as a plant-based athlete. Some lack a pleasant taste. Others don’t sit well in my gut. And others, upon subsequent review, have not been put through adequate third-party testing.

My go-to favorite protein powder is Previnex Nourify PLUS, which undergoes rigorous independent testing to ensure it retains high quality. Nourify, which is offered in chocolate and vanilla flavors, has 21g of protein for chocolate (and 20g for vanilla) and tastes great.

Try out Previnex and use my code HENRY15 to save 15%. (I also use Previnex supplements for recovery, which I wrote about previously.)

Here are some reasons why I choose

Previnex Nourify PLUS

  • It contains all branch chain amino acids, which can help stimulate protein synthesis, reduce muscle breakdown, and aid in recovery.

  • It contains no preservatives, added sugars, gums, artificial sweeteners, dairy, soy, or gluten.

  • One serving contains one billion probiotics with digestive enzymes to promote digestion and immunity.

Tale of the tape (two scoops of chocolate):

  • Calories: 230

  • Protein: 21g

  • Carbs: 21g

  • Sugars: 5g

Previnex Nourify PLUS is made with a pea protein blend, rice syrup solids, coconut oil, natural flavors, potassium phosphate, dicalcium phosphate, sodium, chloride, silica and calcium citrate.

Conclusion

The Previnex Nourify PLUS single packets are great for traveling.

Since I’ve switched to Previnex Nourify PLUS, I’ve noticed a range of changes. I am recovering more quickly, my gut has felt better and I have a renewed sense of energy.

Using carbs before and during your run provides your body with the fuel it needs. After your runs, aim to get in 20g to 30g of protein, along with healthy carbs.

And follow that up with similar amounts of protein in meals and snacks throughout the day with the goal of hitting 100g daily. An afternoon protein shake with Previnex Nourify PLUS will help achieve that amount of protein necessary to help the body recover and will reduce the chance of an injury.
