Nathan Hyper-Reflective Vest review: Maximum visibility for low-light running

By Henry Howard
When the sun rises later and sets earlier, visibility becomes even more critical to runners, cyclists and hikers. Whether you are out for an early-morning run before work or logging evening miles afterward, be sure to make yourself visible to drivers, cyclists and other runners.
As the creator of the Zero Dark Thirty Run Club on Strava, I am routinely out for my morning runs or bike rides before dawn. I’ve learned to have my head on a swivel and be extra vigilant for my own safety, especially at intersections.
Now, I have a new ally that helps me stay safe during my morning workout in the dark.
The Nathan Hyper-Reflective Vest is built for exactly that job. It uses 360-degree reflective fabric to provide visibility from up to 150 meters (almost 500 feet), in a lightweight, wind- and water-resistant package. I put it through more than two dozen runs and bike rides in the dark to see how well it performed. Here is what I found.
Why the Nathan Hyper-Reflective Vest is worth getting

Visibility
This is the whole point of the vest, so I tested and monitored it throughout my runs. The reflective fabric covers the entire garment instead of relying on a few strips or panels. So you can be seen from an angle. That’s the issue I had with other jackets and reflective material. A few strips don’t show up as well as an entire vest, which is the best solution for visibility for low-light running.
Fit and comfort
The vest has a unisex relaxed fit, and the interior draw cord in the back lets you fine-tune it. The Small/Medium covers a 35-inch to 40-inch chest. As a runner with a thin build, it felt a tad big for me. But once I add another layer or two, it will fit even better over warmer gear.
Breathability
Side mesh inserts and a back vent are meant to keep heat from building up, and at 5.2 ounces the vest is light. During my runs and rides, the vest did not create any breathability issues. It fit well over a running jacket and my arms were free to move about.
Pockets and storage
The two side pockets are sized for a phone, a soft flask or nutrition. I prefer to keep my phone in a shorts pocket or Nathan waist band but these pockets were great for carrying nutrition.
Weather resistance

Nathan describes the fabric as wind- and water-resistant, designed for light to medium wet weather storms. That makes it a layer for drizzle and breezy mornings, not a fully waterproof shell. I ran with the vest on a few mornings with a light rain, and it held up well. It’s not waterproof but I don’t need it to be as I would rely on another layer to keep me fully dry.

Who should buy the Nathan Hyper-Reflective Vest
This vest makes sense for runners who train before sunrise or after sunset, especially on roads where traffic is a concern. It also suits anyone who wants a light, wind- and water-resistant layer that doubles as a visibility upgrade.
I regularly run and bike on a community trail where others also enjoy their morning exercise. I know that sometimes it is harder to see others who run without lights or reflective gear. The Nathan vest is clearly among the best ways to stay visible to others on the paved trail.
The Nathan Hyper-Reflective Vest is highly recommended for runners, cyclists, commuters, dog walkers and others who want to be seen in the darkness. Specifically, run and bike commuters, trail runners, those who frequently cross intersections and others would find the vest to be a powerful ally in the effort to stay seen and safe.
If low-light visibility is your priority, the Nathan Hyper-Reflective Vest delivers 360-degree reflective coverage in a light, breathable, wind- and water-resistant layer with pockets for the essentials.
Other Nathan gear you might like
I have had the opportunity to test and review other Nathan gear. If you are building out a low-light or all-weather running kit, I have tested several other Nathan products, including:
The Nathan Peak Hydration Waist Pack, a perfect solution for slim runners like me in need of a high-quality running belt.
The Nathan Zipster Lite, a lightweight band that features two zippered, weather-resistant pockets and two folded pockets.
The Nathan HyperNight Reflective Beanie 2 and Reflective Gloves 2, two standout pieces from Nathan’s HyperNight collection that I recommend for early morning runs in colder weather.
Frequently Asked Questions: Nathan Hyper-Reflective Vest for visibility for low-light running
How visible is the Nathan Hyper-Reflective Vest?
Nathan says its all-over reflective fabric provides 360-degree visibility and can be seen from up to 150 meters, or almost 500 feet.
Do I still need a light if I wear a reflective vest?
Reflective material works by bouncing back light that hits it, such as car headlights. It does not produce light on its own, so I recommend pairing reflective gear with a waist light, headlamp or handheld light in order to improve what you can see when running in full darkness.

Is the vest waterproof?
It is wind- and water-resistant and designed for light to medium wet weather storms, but it is not a fully waterproof rain jacket.
What can I carry in the pockets?
Dual side pockets hold a phone, a soft flask or nutrition such as gels, waffles and other items.
What size should I buy?
The size Small/Medium fits a 35-inch to 40-inch chest. The vest has a unisex relaxed fit, and an interior draw cord in the back allows micro size adjustments. Check Nathan’s size chart for other sizes and also think about the time of year when you are most likely to wear it, and how many other layers you will require for outdoor activity.
Will I overheat in it?
Side mesh inserts and a back vent add breathability, and the vest weighs 5.2 ounces. I never felt overheated during my runs and bike rides.
Is it just for running?
Nathan lists running as its best use. But it can also be used for cycling, which I did; hiking; walking, and other activities where being visible is a priority.
