As a gear tester with over a decade of experience, I’ve learned that great gear reveals itself in the details and the miles. Over the past couple of months, I have been testing several items from Mudgear, a brand born from obstacle course racing in 2012.
I tested a couple of different types of Mudgear socks that outperform better known brands, as well as a high-performing base layer and a hoodie that serves as a protective outer shell.
While my review focuses on running, these products prove equally valuable for cyclists, CrossFitters, and outdoor athletes of all types.

Mudgear Socks: Best I’ve tested in a decade

After logging countless miles in Mudgear’s socks, I can confidently say these are among the best running socks I’ve tested. What sets them apart is their commitment to American-made quality, using premium yarn blends engineered specifically for durability and comfort.
And when it comes to being durable, Mudgear stands out well above the other half-dozen or so running sock brands I have previously worn. In fact, Mudgear stands behind its quality with an impressive guarantee of 25,000 miles for its socks.
From its website: “Why 25,000 miles? That's roughly the equatorial circumference of the Earth. That's far enough to run to see that there's no tougher or better performing socks on the planet. If you don't agree, just contact our support team, and we'll make it right.”
Quarter Crew Trail Running Socks
The Quarter Crew socks feature advanced poly-blend material (95% polyester, 5% spandex) with ventilated mesh zones that kept my feet surprisingly dry during long runs. The medium cushion footbed strikes the perfect balance: substantial enough for protection without becoming waterlogged. Strategic cushioning in key areas provides superior support, while the non-slip heel design keeps everything locked in place on technical trails.
Most importantly: zero blisters across multiple runs of 10 miles and longer.
The ankle compression is perfectly calibrated. It’s tight enough to keep debris out but never restrictive. Smooth toe seams and anti-chafing design mean you can forget about your feet and focus on your run.
5” Crew Height Trail Running Sock
The 5” Crew takes everything great about the Quarter Crew and adds extra coverage. Landing well above the ankle but below the calf, they offer ideal protection for trail running without adding bulk or calf pressure.
The same strategic thread placement and medium compression carry over, with a footbed that’s soft yet designed not to retain water or mud. Ventilation zones promote airflow and drainage, so these socks wear comfortably even after creek crossings.
I reach for the 5” Crew for trail runs where I appreciate extra protection, while the Quarter Crew remains my go-to for road runs.
Either way, you will be satisfied with choosing these high-quality running socks.
Men’s Fitted Performance Shirt VX: Versatile base layer excellence

The Mudgear Performance Shirt VX represents Mudgear’s 10th-anniversary iteration, showing a decade of refinement. Originally developed for obstacle racers tired of soggy cotton and shredded gym shirts, it brings genuine toughness to everyday training.
I’ve used this shirt as a base layer for cold early morning runs and indoor bike sessions. The lightweight, moisture-wicking fabric delivers breathable all-day performance whether grinding through a chilly run or knocking off a sweaty bike workout. The technical design prioritizes and excels in moisture control, flexibility, quick-dry properties and comfort.
The VX returns to Mudgear’s original V1 fabric based on customer feedback, with a slightly less tight fit than their V3 version and a longer cut ideal for taller athletes. Heavy-duty flat-lock stitching adds durability without pressure points. After multiple washes, it still looks new.
The fitted cut provides a performance-oriented silhouette without excessive compression, staying in place during workouts while allowing maximum flexibility. It is versatile enough for virtually any athlete — from runners doing tempo runs to CrossFitters doing strength training to cyclists piling on the miles.
All-Weather Warrior Hoodie: Perfect for the commute

The All-Weather Warrior Hoodie became my go-to for biking and walking commutes during fall weather, exceeding expectations at every turn. And I expect to repeat that when spring comes around.
The water-repellent exterior combines with warm fleece lining to create genuine protection against the elements while maintaining warmth, a welcome balance many hoodies fail to achieve. The breathable design prevents overheating during active commutes yet provides enough insulation for 25-minute walks.
Smart details make the difference.
The front pocket easily accommodates hands, keys, glasses, phone and/or other essentials. The drawstring hood provides adjustable coverage when weather turns. The hook-and-loop patch pad on the upper right arm is perfect for displaying race patches, a thoughtful touch for the adventure racing community.
Minimal branding gives the hoodie a clean look that transitions seamlessly from trail to town, comfortable enough for all-day wear but technical enough for actual training in variable conditions.
Why Mudgear Stands Out
What makes Mudgear exceptional isn’t just individual product quality. It’s their testing philosophy.

Rather than standard abrasion tests, they put gear on elite obstacle racers and trail runners for real punishment: mountain ascents in all weather, full submersion in muddy water, ultra marathons. This testing-by-fire approach results in products that genuinely perform when it matters.
The commitment to American manufacturing for socks, using premium yarns and expert construction, sets them apart in a market dominated by imports. This reflects genuine quality control and craftsmanship, not just marketing.
For runners, Mudgear solves real problems. Blisters, soggy feet, inadequate base layers, and insufficient weather protection aren’t minor inconveniences. They’re performance limiters addressed through thoughtful engineering rather than generic solutions.
The appeal extends beyond running.
Cyclists appreciate moisture-wicking and durability. CrossFitters value flexible, tough construction. Weekend warriors doing Spartan races find gear that handles obstacles and elements. The “Made Tougher” mantra is a design philosophy resonating across multiple athletic disciplines.
Frequently Asked Questions about Mudgear
Q: Are Mudgear socks worth the investment?
A: Absolutely. The combination of blister prevention, durability (25,000-mile warranty), and genuine comfort justifies the premium price. After testing numerous running sock brands over the years, these rank among the best I’ve worn for serious trail and distance running.
Q: How does the Performance Shirt VX fit?
A: True to size with a fitted but not overly tight cut. Slightly less compressive than compression shirts but more form-fitting than standard tees. The longer cut accommodates taller runners well. A Loose Fit version is also available.
Q: Is the hoodie actually waterproof?
A: It’s water-repellent, not fully waterproof. Handles light rain, mist, and splashes excellently but isn’t designed for sustained downpours. Perfect for commuting, pre-race warmups and moderate weather protection.
Q: Can these handle machine washing?
A: Yes. The socks and performance shirt are machine washable and maintain their performance through multiple cycles. The hoodie requires turning inside out, delicate cycle with cold water, and hang drying, which is standard care for technical outerwear.
Q: Are these suitable for non-runners?
A: Definitely. While engineered for runners, the moisture management, durability, and comfort make them excellent for cycling, CrossFit, hiking, rucking, obstacle racing, and outdoor training. Versatility is a Mudgear strength.
