5 reasons to run the Key West half marathon

In mid-January when much of the United States is shivering, thoughts often turn to warmer climates like Florida for a much-needed respite.

For runners who seek out destination races it’s a perfect time to jump into a half marathon or 5K, as training for spring marathons and half marathons begins to rev up.

The Key West (Fla.) Half Marathon and 5K can be an answer for those looking for a break from winter and a great race. Disclaimer: I’m promoting the Key West (Fla.) Half Marathon and as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro ambassador, and check out BibRave.com to find and write race reviews.

It’s not too late to register for the race on Jan. 20, 2019.

Currently, I am in a pause between racing cycles so I am not doing the upcoming Key West race. However, it’s easy to see why it’s a popular option for runners. Here are five reasons to consider running one of the two race distances:

  1. The scenic course is a flat out-and-back, running along the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail. You will pass by the Key West lighthouse, author Ernest Hemingway’s house, and the southernmost point in the United States.

  2. The race provides funds for its local charity partners, primarily the Key West Sunrise Rotary, which will give proceeds to scholarships for Key West students. The local Habitat for Humanity is another beneficiary.

  3. The gender-specific T-shirts look amazing and will likely be used as everyday wear rather than to soak up sweat during a workout. The image is from a picture by photographer Alan S. Maltz.

  4. The race has received accolades from various media, including “25 can’t miss half marathons” by Competitor magazine and “23 half marathons to plan your vacation around” by HalfMarathons.net.

  5. You will finish within a short walk of the Half Shell Raw Bar, where you can celebrate with some seafood and cocktails. And that is something to look forward to — especially in the middle of winter.
