I’m back for the chocolate — and the fun.
The March 30 Allstate Hot Chocolate race in Indianapolis is officially on my race calendar, leading up to the Boston Marathon and my first 100K at the Ultra Race of Champions. When I line up for the Hot Chocolate race, it will be for fun and to enjoy the day in the city where I work.

Third time's the charm
This will be my third Hot Chocolate race. The other two were:
• In December 2017, I ran the St. Louis version, a 1:16:28 for the 15K. It was at the end of my race season and I went out just to have fun — and I did.
• In March of this year, I ran the Indianapolis event, a 24:38 for the 5K. The race directors cancelled the 15K due to predicted wintry weather, but allowed everyone to do the shorter distance. (As I was in training, I ran 10K before the race, then did the 5K.)
Both events were well organized, fun and offered runners plenty of swag and chocolate, of course.
Here are the top five reasons why I am headed back to the Indy race:
Did someone say chocolate? There is no shortage of chocolate at these races, and it’s fun to do a race without the stress of trying to BQ, PR or achieve a specific race goal.
Home sweet home. Once again the start area is at American Legion Mall, adjacent to where I work. Last year, I was able to duck inside to use the restrooms beforehand and refill my water bottle — and warm up — after the race.
Legacy Experience program. Runners who do the 5K or 15K in the same city for three consecutive years, receive special perks and swag from the race series. Additional perks are given out for legacy runners when they hit the five-year and 10-year streaks.
Charity partner. The Make-A-Wish Foundation is the official race charity of the Hot Chocolate race series. Make-A-Wish® creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.
Better weather. After last year’s worries of a winter storm, the 2019 race has to be better, right?
